Ottawa Redblacks bring back General Manager Marcel Desjardins, and coaching staff for potential 2021 CFL season

News coming in just in time for this year’s CFL virtual Grey Cup weekend, the Ottawa Redblacks have announced that they have extended the contracts of GM Marcel Desjardins as well as the entire coaching staff. Though we haven’t seen anything from this coaching staff yet nor have we seen the players that Desjardins brought in this off-season, these are some crucial moves within the front office and some moves to be excited for as Redblacks fans.

2021 Ottawa Redblacks coaching staff

Don’t get me wrong, the last time the Redblacks were on the field at TD Place there weren’t too many bright spots to point out, although that as a whole is a bright spot. In 2014 we found ourselves in a very similar situation to the one we were in during the 2019 season, and just looking at what happened following that 2-16 season in 2014 should get you amped up for the future after that 2019 season.

Looking deeper into it, in the 2015 CFL free agency period, the Redblacks stayed busy, signing big name players on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball Desjardins brought in star receivers Brad Sinopoli, Greg Ellingson, Ernest Jackson, Chris Williams, running back William Powell and did well in the draft getting All-Pro centre Alex Mateas. On the defence, Desjardins made just as many moves and that’s why it relates so much to the offseason we just had before the Covid-19 Pandemic. We went out and got ourselves the coaching staff, highlighted by Grey Cup champion Paul LaPolice, improved our offence with Nick Arbuckle, Anthony Coombs, Jalen Saunders and even revamped the defence with former Redblack Abdul Kanneh, and Cleyon Laing.

All in all the two off-seasons, both 2015 and 2020 were so similar and seeing the success we had the first time around, having Marcel Desjardins back in the building for the second time will be fantastic and its exciting to see where we will stand this time next year pending the 2021 CFL season.
