The 2020-2021 CFL off-season has been an extremely long one. The last time the Ottawa Redblacks stepped foot on the football field was November 1st of 2019 and the next time they will is August 7th 2021 and for the most part that will be the first time a lot of teammates see each other again however that is not the case for Jerod Fernandez, Shaheed Salmon, Ryan Davis, Chase Litton, David Jones and Brad Muhammad. Over the span of the off-season the Ottawa Redblacks teammates have been found training together every once and a while in Tampa Bay, Florida. For some of them it has been getting field work in together or even working out in the gym together but each one of them has been prepping for the 2021 CFL season to insure they help the Redblacks turn the table from the 3-15 season in 2019.
Both Jerod Fernandez and Shaheed Salmon are returning Redblacks linebackers. They spent the 2019 season with Ottawa and showed a large amount of potential playing alongside Avery Williams. With players like Don Unamba, Micah Awe and Christophe Mulumba coming in as well at linebacker the group will only be stronger, a lot like the defensive back room that Muhammad and Jones will be apart of. For the two it will be the first time they play in Canada however with Muhammad’s success at Florida International University as well as in arena football and David Jones’ university success and time spent in the NFL they both are ready to make an impact as newcomers on the defence.
As for the offensive side of the ball, in 2019 when Paul LaPolice and Matt Nichols were together last there were a number of players making plays for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers not only at receiver like where Ryan Davis will fill in nicely in Ottawa but also at quarterback. LaPolice had three quarterbacks play for him in 2019 and each one of them played a large role in winning the grey cup at the end of the day so having someone like Chase Litton, a quarterback signed by Ottawa this off-season already being around his teammates is a great look. The 6 players that have been together over the off-season will be coming up to Ottawa within the next few weeks and compete for a roster spot very soon so stay tuned to them all and the Ottawa Redblacks as the CFL comes back August 5th.
